Why Pai?

Northern Thailand's bohemian valley

Pai is one of the most special towns in northern Thailand. Nestled in a mountain valley in Mae Hong Son province, it has a unique personality — a blend of tribal culture, international bohemian spirit and lush nature. Its rice fields, waterfalls, hot springs and the famous Pai Canyon make it one of the country's most photogenic destinations. And the Walking Street night market, literally next to the hostel, is the social heart of the town.

What makes Pai special is its pace of life. Without the crowds of Bangkok or Chiang Mai, time passes slowly here between mountain-view cafés, motorbike rides through rice paddies, hot spring soaks and sunsets over the valley. A destination that captures your heart and is hard to leave.

What to see in Pai

Pai Canyon, a few kilometres away, is the unmissable visit — a red earth formation with panoramic valley views that becomes one of northern Thailand's most beautiful sights at sunset. Tha Pai Hot Springs, 7 km away, are perfect for relaxing after a day of exploration. And the Pam Bok and Mo Paeng waterfalls are ideal for wild swimming.

Wat Phra That Mae Yen — the hilltop Buddhist temple with the White Buddha — offers the best views of Pai Valley at dawn, after climbing about 350 steps. And the Walking Street night market, literally next to the hostel, is the best plan for dinner among locals and buying crafts at unbeatable prices.

Getting here

The most popular way to reach Pai is by bus from Chiang Mai — frequent departures from the Arcade Bus Terminal. The journey takes about 3–4 hours along the legendary 762-curve road (Route 1095). Shared minivans are also available and faster. The Pai Bus Station is just 300 metres from the hostel — no taxi needed.

Getting around

The most popular alternative among travellers is to rent a motorbike in Chiang Mai and ride up the mountain road — an experience in itself. Once in Pai, a motorbike is the best way to explore the surroundings: the Canyon, waterfalls and hot springs are all within 10 km of the town centre.
