View on BookingCagliari is one of the most authentic island capitals in the Mediterranean. Unlike other more crowded Sardinian destinations, the capital keeps an intense and genuine local life: neighbourhood markets, sea-view terraces, a Sardinian gastronomy that hasn't surrendered to mass tourism, and a historic centre — the Castello district — that surprises with its state of preservation and its panoramas over the Gulf of Cagliari.
The city is also a perfect base for exploring southern Sardinia: the crystal-clear coves of the Sulcis, the pink salt flats of Molentargius (a flamingo refuge), the Nuragic ruins of Barumini and the white-sand beaches of Villasimius are all less than an hour's drive away.
The Castello district is the historic heart of the city: medieval alleyways, the Towers of Saint Pancras and the Elephant, the Cathedral of Santa Maria and viewpoints offering 360° views over the sea and lagoons. At sunset, the Bastion of Saint Rémy becomes the meeting point for locals and travellers.
The Marina neighbourhood is the liveliest for eating and drinking: small Sardinian taverns, wine bars with local Malvasia, and fresh fish restaurants. Nearby is the San Benedetto Market, the largest covered market in Italy by surface area, with a whole floor dedicated to fish.
For the beach, Poetto is Cagliari's urban stretch of sand: 8 km of fine sand just 10 minutes from the centre by bus, with beach bars, water sports and a local atmosphere all summer long.
Old Town (Castello), Marina and Stampace districts, and nearby beaches like Poetto. Sardinian cuisine and a Mediterranean vibe throughout.
The centre is walkable; for beaches and coves, consider a car or bus. Mild weather most of the year.
Cagliari-Elmas Airport is just 6 km from the centre and is Sardinia's best-connected airport, with direct flights from numerous Spanish, Italian and European cities. From the airport there is a train to Cagliari's central station in about 7 minutes, plus taxis and buses.
You can also arrive by ferry from Barcelona, Civitavecchia (Rome), Genoa or Naples. Cagliari's port is right in the city centre. Once in the city, the historic centre is perfectly walkable; for excursions to the south of the island, renting a car is recommended.
Key areas: Castello, Marina, Poetto and the Trade Fair district — perfect for walking the centre and reaching the beaches by bus.
